What is an Agrihood?

We’re excited to bring Oklahoma’s first “agrihood“ to Green Country! The expansion will allow us to grow our vocational and residential client services to reach even more individuals with developmental disabilities and Autism. But what is an agrihood?

“Instead of building a community around a golf course, you build a community around a community garden,” says our CEO, Mary Ogle. “This will give [our clients] an opportunity to live and work with other people who also have disabilities and to help support the community by running this community garden and farm. This is what we’re good at. This is what A New Leaf started as, with our greenhouses and our retail store.”

We’ll offer different housing models for our clients in an effort to meet them where they are. Some units are private living quarters, some are roommate/shared home set-ups, and some are family homes. That flexibility means that any individuals with developmental disabilities will be able to move into The Village right away and begin learning independent living skills and to comfortably live on their own.

We’re grateful to the donors who made this 50-acre project possible! The project is an expansion of our existing Broken Arrow greenhouse and retail garden center, and we are breaking ground this spring on Phase 1. Phase 1 includes the following:

Hilti Horticulture Training Center

Housing for 57 clients

1 Community home

5 single family homes

1 single bedroom apartment building (6 units)

1 Transitional Academy

Dining Hall

Administration building

2-acre farm
